Explore Tsumago-juku, a carefully preserved Edo-period post town with no overhead wires or car traffic, and taste freshly grilled gohei mochi. Standard plan: everyone continues by car to Magome-juku. Optional split: hikers leave Tsumago around 11:30 and follow the old Nakasendo over Magome Pass to Magome; drivers visit both towns by road, carry the large luggage, and may continue to Nagoya without waiting.

TipTsumago to Magome is the harder direction: allow 3 to 3.5 hours for 8 to 9 km and roughly 370 m of climbing. Carry only a daypack and wear shoes with good grip.
WarningDo not start the full trail after 12:15. Wet leaves and stone paving become slippery, and sunset is around 16:40. Skip the hike and stay with the drivers if rain is heavy or the trail is icy.

Drivers: leave Kiso by 14:30 to 15:00, join the Chuo Expressway at Nakatsugawa IC, and continue to Nagoya. Hikers: finish in Magome around 14:30 to 15:30, then take the Kitaena bus to Nakatsugawa Station and the JR Chuo Line to Nagoya. The published bus options include 14:50, 15:50, and a 16:50 fallback; confirm the timetable shortly before travel.

Car return and reunion at the Nagoya hotel

The drivers refuel near Taiko-dori, return the car at the Nagoya Station branch by 18:00, and take everyone's large luggage to the hotel.
